A portraitist and fashion photographer by profession, an artist by vocation, Man Ray found in the female figure one of his greatest interests: models, inspirational muses, companions, pupils and colleagues, such as Berenice Abbott, Lee Miller, Meret Oppenheim, Nusch Eluard, Kiki de Montparnasse, Dora Maar, and Juliet, represented a universe of relationships as diverse as they were crucial in the evolution of his life and poetics.
In their turn, such women were in some cases great photographers, in others central figures in the cultural history of the time, as emerges from this volume, edited by Walter Guadagnini and Giangavino Pazzola, which places in dialogue more than one hundred masterpieces by the American artist, true icons of 20th-century photography, with the images of the protagonists of an extraordinary season of world culture.

This book, published to accompany an exhibition at Triennale in Milan, is an example of how a multidisciplinary approach can be used to examine and inform. Work clothes are transformed from uniforms and the symbols of a profession into the expression of an individual identity, but also into a form of cladding that is at times far removed from its original function.
