EXPLORATION

New York City

issue #58: Exploration: new york city

Selecting (only) 9 spots in NYC is no easy task. To do so, we let ourselves be guided by the search for New York’s unique charm and by the selection of what we wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else.

[1/9] EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE: JEREMY ANDERSON

We visit @thesalonny (Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue), a fair that brings together the most important art and design galleries from around the world. Here, we meet New York-based artist @jeremy_r_anderson, guest of @gallery_fumi (London), who works in the medium of ceramics, creating a fantastic world of glowing screws, flora, and whimsical forms that invite viewers into a playful and enchanting realm. Anderson is not only an artist — he is also the co-founder of @apparatusstudio (vedi sotto).

[2/9] MUST-VISIT PLACE: QUARTERS

A must-visit for design lovers is @shopquarters (383 Broadway), a concept store and wine bar hidden on the second floor of a historic Tribeca loft. It was founded by @f_hung and @nozemba, the creators of the design studio @incommonwith. The space spans 700 square meters and is furnished like a private residence, combining the intimacy of a home with the theatricality of hospitality. It blends pieces by @incommonwith with vintage furniture and independent works by other designers.

[3/9] EXCITING SCOUTING BRAND: RACHEL COMEY

We move to Nolita (SoHo), where we visit the @rachelcomey store (95 Crosby St). Known for its eclectic and sophisticated womenswear style, deconstructed cuts and made in USA production, the brand has a loyal following among professionals, creatives and intellectuals, especially among New York women. Her creations are often considered work uniforms for women working in the worlds of art, design and writing. The store, designed by Elizabeth Roberts Architects, is a must see and, in our opinion, the perfect place to start exploring the nearby streets — Prince Street, Elizabeth Street and Mulberry Street. Worth walking from end to end.

[4/9] CURATED COFFEE: HUDSON WILDER

We cross the Brooklyn Bridge and head to the DUMBO neighborhood, where we stop for a coffee at @hudsonwilder (142 Plymouth Street). Opened in 2015, it is a refined concept store that combines a creative studio, showroom and café, offering an immersive experience that blends design, art and hospitality. It is located in a 1910 building designed by Robert Gair, which in the 1990s hosted a Japanese motorcycle club and served as the set for a famous Peter Lindbergh photo shoot for Vogue.

[5/9] COOL BRAND: APPARATUS

@apparatusstudio is a New York-based brand and design studio that explores the relationship between lighting, furniture and objects. Rooted in the modernist principle of Gesamtkunstwerk (a total work of art, meaning the harmonious union of all artistic forms into one coherent aesthetic experience), the brand presents collections that reveal individual pieces as artifacts of a holistic world. The New York space (124 West 30th Street) is a temple of sensual materials such as marble, suede, horsehair, lacquer and porcelain, combined with hand-patinated brass.

[6/9] KALEIDOSCOPIC IDEAS: CASA MAGAZINES

In the heart of the West Village (22 8th Avenue) lies @casamagazinesnyc — a small yet incredibly dense newsstand that has become a true place of worship for collectors, creatives, designers and magazine lovers from around the world. It is much more than a shop. For over 30 years, it has been a space of inspiration, a meeting point for those working in the creative world, and a symbol of cultural resistance in a digital age. Stepping inside feels like embarking on a journey through hundreds of editorial visions, visual trends and ideas in motion.

[7/9] MEMORABLE OBJECT: RADNOR

@radnor.co has opened its new showroom in Manhattan (180 East 88th Street), located inside a 300-square-meter apartment that occupies an entire floor and offers views of New York’s urban landscape. Inside, you’ll find furniture by Radnor’s founder @sueclarks, as well as by designers Karl Zahn and Elizabeth Roberts Architects, who also designed the space. The showroom is open by appointment only, but it is a must for anyone looking to immerse themselves in Manhattan’s way of living.

[8/9] UNFORGETTABLE EXHIBITION: MENDES WOOD DM

The New York location of Mendes Wood DM gallery (with other spaces in São Paulo, Brussels and Paris) presents As primeiras coisas (The First Things), an exhibition of paintings by Brazilian artist Paula Siebra. The artist extracts primordial images from everyday objects, signs and emotions that invite the viewer to immerse themselves in memorial contexts. With initial concision and disarming immediacy, each image is delivered incisively, like a dense crystal of memory. Siebra’s paintings reflect on collective memories and human desires, wrapped in a metaphysical and nostalgic atmosphere.

[9/9] FINE DINING: BLUE NOTE

Going to @bluenotenyc (131 West 3rd Street) means immersing yourself in the musical history of NYC, as well as in a culinary experience. It is a legendary landmark not only for jazz enthusiasts but also for anyone seeking an authentic New York experience in the heart of Greenwich Village. Since its stage was inaugurated in 1981 by founder Danny Bensusan, giants such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie and Wynton Marsalis have performed there.
