The Guatelli Collection is the most important collection of olive oil tins in existence: from export tins to those for the domestic market produced between the end of the 19th century and the end of World War II.
The prestige of the collection lies in the fact that these are the first plates that were to serve as a reference for the circulation of the entire production: they constitute clear evidence of how, at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, factories sprang up in Liguria, particularly in the city of Imperia, as a result of the increase in olive oil production, supplying lithographed tinplate packaging for the Italian export industry.
It began that happy union between technological-industrial progress and artistic research that led to excellent results, not only from a commercial point of view but also as a means of transmitting taste and the new languages of art, which made it possible to reach an increasingly wide audience.
