[Author: Francesca Zanella]
The relationship between thought and image is a constant in the work of Ettore Sottsass jr (1917-2007) that clearly emerges from his archives, created and donated to the CSAC of the University of Parma in 1979 to testify his activity from 1922 to 1978. The book gives an account of this archive, a sort of autobiography, through its cataloguing, flanked by some historical-critical in-depth analysis, that allows us to reconstruct research, relationships and exchanges.

Thanks to the almost 14,000 small sheets of paper, tempera, sketches, project drawings, notes, notebooks and a few rare photographs, it is possible to reconstruct the traces of frequentations and linguistic comparisons, highlighting the specific nature of Sottsass’s work, from interior design to architecture and design. What emerges is a cross-section of the most significant moments of collaboration with industry and thus the start of a reflection on a new idea of design in the 1970s.
