The implicit question in the title of the XXI Triennale, Design after design, poses the problem of “what is there after the project?”, that is, what voices resonate in each object beyond its function and form. One is therefore called upon to reason about meaning. The volume documents, among others, architectural projects by Gio Ponti, Figini and Pollini, Vico Magistretti and Mario Tedeschi, Giovanni Muzio, Ignazio Gardella, Luigi Caccia Dominioni; works by Lucio Fontana, Francesco Messina, Fausto Melotti, Emilio Greco, Mario Sironi, William Congdon, Adolfo Wildt, Roberto Sambonet and William Xerra; photographs by Giovanni Chiaramonte, Mario Cresci, Gabriele Basilico, Mario Carrieri and Francesco Radino.
The implicit question in the title of the XXI Triennale, Design after design, poses the problem of “what is there after the project?”, that is, what voices resonate in each object beyond its function and form. One is therefore called upon to reason about meaning. Entering into a specific field, without going into strictly doctrinal analysis, we can certainly state that, since time immemorial, there has been a form of art, architecture, music, photography, in a word, a project, which poses the problem of “what is there after (or before?)”. A project aimed at representing the infinite in finite forms: this is why “Design after Design” is transformed into “Design behind Design”. Analyzing the “representations of the sacred”, in the territory of the Archdiocese of Milan, from the post-war period to today, means telling the story of a man-creator able to look beyond his pencil, designing both the object and its meaning. “After” or “Behind” can therefore be used to indicate the shift of meaning towards the “mysterion”, towards what is “not completely revealed”, which is “before and after things”. The volume documents, among others, architectural projects by Gio Ponti, Figini and Pollini, Vico Magistretti and Mario Tedeschi, Giovanni Muzio, Ignazio Gardella, Luigi Caccia Dominioni; works by Lucio Fontana, Francesco Messina, Fausto Melotti, Emilio Greco, Mario Sironi, William Congdon, Adolfo Wildt, Roberto Sambonet and William Xerra; photographs by Giovanni Chiaramonte, Mario Cresci, Gabriele Basilico, Mario Carrieri and Francesco Radino.
