A tractor seat that turns into a stool, a bicycle saddle that becomes a swinging but practicable support point, a sack full of polystyrene pellets that has no shape but for this very reason goes along with any movement, a bundle of sticks that open up to hold clothes…
There are hundreds of disruptive examples that can be cited to tell what Zanotta, a company founded in 1954 by the desire, will and energy of its founder, Aurelio, was capable of. An entrepreneur of rare sensibility, capable of building a reality that represents one of the most beautiful ‘collective’ histories of Italian industry, with 550 projects realised by 120 different designers – in other words, all the great masters of design, from Enzo Mari to Alessandro Mendini, from Bruno Munari to Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, from Gio Ponti to Marco Zanuso, from Gae Aulenti to Ettore Sottsass, to name but a few – and almost 100 objects that have won awards and ended up in design museums all over the world.
The book, organised like a dictionary, collects 101 thoughts, anecdotes and critical interpretations on as many and more projects that have gone into production over the course of sixty years, through which the author outlines the characteristics, specificities and horizons of a company that has always been curious and interested in the new, at the forefront of technological expertise, and that with curiosity, humour, irony and passion has written a fundamental chapter in the history of design.
