HIGH COFFEE

Christoph Pliessnig & Julian Epok: The art of change

issue #33: the art of change

High Coffee between Marco Magalini, Editor-in-chief of Caleido, and Julian Epok & Christoph Pliessnig, founders of t.a.s.© gallery, addresses the theme of change, or how it is often necessary to transform what surrounds us in order to ensure a relevant future. The meeting is in their Cypriot art alcove. Welcome to Caleido, Kaleidoscopic Observatory on the world of creativity / Read the Editor’s letter here

Landing in Cyprus (Larnaca), one is greeted by an atmosphere as contrasting as it is evocative: rugged, barren, and challenging landscapes juxtapose a human panorama that is welcoming, smiling, and sunny. Taking a taxi for about half an hour, you wind along winding mountain roads, skirting breathtaking slopes where small semi-deserted villages cling, with effort. You arrive in Lefkara, a village that at first glance seems like any other. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the situation here is entirely different. It is within the narrow streets that one glimpses, shyly, the reason why Lefkara boasts UNESCO World Heritage status: local silver craftsmanship and embroidery, so noble that it convinced Leonardo da Vinci to use the codified style of “Lefkara embroidery” to paint the tablecloth for his “Ultima Cena”. Among these rustic-style workshops emerges a temple of contemporary art and minimalism, exquisitely out of context, with a bright sign and an enveloping fragrance. This is t.a.s.©, a contemporary art gallery (selling pieces by new-generation artists, along with design and fashion items), with a small courtyard transformed into a sophisticated champagne bar. The Austrian duo composed of artist @julian.epok (with a background in graffiti, photography, and multimedia painting) and entrepreneur @chris.plg (CEO of the Digital Asset Boutique @teroxx.official) revisited the cultural soul of the island, transforming it into this bold key. Spoiler alert: the next step? A second gallery in Vienna.
