1. If you had to select some photographs to paste into your summer diary, called “Remote summer”, what would they be? Thinking back to when you took them, what struck you?

Fäboden, Hunsnäs, Dalarna. As a documentary photographer I sometimes struggle with portraying the same people and the same landscape over and over again – Fäboden is the clear exception. I’ve spent almost a decade documenting this little house in the middle of nowhere and I’m never uninspired. Because this is a place where people ease into something everlasting. Something symbiotic and honest. It’s a place full of joy which still leaves equal room for contemplation and melancholy. A place that allows you to detach from preconstructed and socialized ideas of human interaction and reconnect with nature and listening to your body.

2. If you were now in that precise situation, and you had to send a postcard, to whom would you send it? What message would you write?

I would send a postcard to my grandma, even though she’s no longer with us. I would tell her about the well were we get our fresh water, how when the sun goes down we play cards next the open fire on a candle lit table. I would tell her about the mushrooms I picked and how I cooked them after her recipe with cream and onions. How delicious it was. I would tell her I miss her and wish she could come here.

3. What is an object you would never part with (apart from your camera)? What emotions does it arouse in you?

I used to be extraordinarily attached to objects when I was younger. Giving them names, personalities, life. Everything from a dead autumn leaf to my cd-walkman had their own identity. Loosing either (I lost both of the above…) would make me sink into deep sadness and grief. As if I lost a part of myself. I no longer attach that kind of value to the things around me. Regardless if they are replaceable or not – they live with me for as long as they’re meant to. And then they don’t.

Sara Herrlander is a Swedish documentary photographer, visual artist and filmmaker based in Berlin. Her art allows people to feel intimately close with her subjects and are recognizable by her signature use of ochre and blue. Her work as a photographer focuses on documenting her surroundings with a raw, childlike sincerity; as a participant, rather than a fly on the wall.
